Healing Session

NOV. 30-DEC. 2--Followers of the Twelve Apostles Church pray before the start of a healing session during a ceremony in Tarkwa, Ghana, Nov. 16, 2001. Followers believe that the Osorfo, or priest, receives guidance during trances in order to diagnose and cure illnesses using spiritual powers and herbal remedies. In an attempt to merge ancient rituals with modern day medicine, these traditional healers, who for many are the the only medical care available, are being trained by CARE, a private international relief organization, to recognize the symptoms of HIV/AIDS and to educate their communities on how to care for people dying of AIDS in Ghana.
