Headmaster Complains About Low Enrollment

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 8 Dec.,

Mr.. S.K. Abankwah, Headmaster of Jacobu Secondary-Technical School in the Amansie-East District, has complained about the low enrollment in the school and called on citizens to help address the problem. He said, the school which offers both agricultural and vocational subjects, can admit 300 students, but its current enrollment stands at only 77. Mr.. Abankwah who was addressing members of the Jacobu "Kro Ye Kuo" in Kumasi said as a result of the low enrollment, a hostel built to cater for about 70 students, has only six students occupying it. He rejected a seemingly misconception that the school is not doing well academically, and said 75 percent of candidates presented for last year's Senior Secondary School Examination, passed in the English language and many more had passes in various subjects. Mr.. Abankwah warned that if the enrollment continues to go down the Ghana Education Service would have no other option than to close down the school. Reacting to the Headmaster's complaint Mr.. King George Kyem, Chairman of the "Kro Ye Kuo", advised citizens of Jacobu and its surrounding villages to take advantage of the Secondary School and educate their children. He was of the view that the area's under-development was partly due to lack of quality human resources. Saying, "Even if we want our children to be only farmers, we should educate them to be good farmers not just peasant farmers".
