Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba says the brutal violent attack the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson suffered was nothing special.
According to her, numerous cases of political violence have occurred in the past where political activists including a sitting member of parliament were physically assaulted during a by-election.
She, therefore, queried how the assault the former MP suffered during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary elections re-run has suddenly gained currency on the lips of the minority.
Madam Laadi Ayii Ayamba stated this on the floor of parliament on Wednesday July 16, 2025, while reacting to a statement laid on the floor by the minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
In his statement, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin indicated that the brutal attack on Hawa Koomson was not just political misconduct but a well calculated military style operation that target political opponents.
He, therefore, called on the house as well as Civil Society Organisations to roundly condemn such acts of politically coordinated violence and intimidations in our body politic.
The minority leader’s statement generated huge controversy as members from the majority side reacted to his statement with defiance positions.
Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba who first reacted to the statement from the majority side indicated that the call by the minority leader smacked of hypocrisy.
This, she said, was due to the fact that the same minority leader and his side maintained loud silence when they were in the majority position and a lot of such acts happened.
Though she condemned the violence, she was quick to add, “Mr Speaker, this is the first time in my fourth year in parliament that after numerous electoral violence that have occurred in this country, this [has been made] a special one.
“Mr Speaker, I would have stayed out mentioning my sister’s name, Hawa Koomson but once her name is on the statement and it has been mentioned, I will do that”
“Hawa Koomson knows it so well that apart from the atrocities that have ever occurred in her own constituency where lives were lost, she knows it very well that if she went to that election and came out without any problem, it will have been coming from her own attitude”. She added.
According to the Pusiga MP, she was shocked when she learned that the former MP used “pepper spray and I saw her even spraying it”
She continued that she was a victim of politically motivated vigilante attacks at Atiwa where she said, she ran back to Accra to save her dear life.
“Mr Speaker, are we saying that this is the first time we have had such a problem? This is not the first time I was a victim at Atiwa by-election.
“This is not the first time, but I have never heard a word being authored. Mr Speaker, Techiman South, what did we not see, what lives have we not lost? We lost lives”. She stressed.
She alleged that even though precious lives were lost in the aforesaid constituency during the 2020 elections, no investigations were made to bring the perpetrators to book.
Former Member of Parliament for the Awutu-Senya East constituency in the central region, Mavis Hawa Koomson suffered her worst attack in her entire political life on the 11th of July at Ablekuma North.
She was kicked and stamped many times by individuals alleged to be members of the ruling government’s party, the National Democratic Congress.
