The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to his opponent, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to give him a chance to become president.
Dr Bawumia pointed out that Mahama has previously served as vice president and president, so there is no urgency for him to seek the position at this time.
The vice president argued that since both he and Mahama hail from the Northern Region, it would not be out of place if he (Mahama) agreed to wait for another four years to contest for president again.
In a meeting with Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV at his Palace in Wa on Sunday, May 19, 2024, Dr. Bawumia urged Mahama to allow him to lead the country, emphasizing the pride it would bring to the people in the north to have produced two different presidents.
"[My main opponent and I] are both your children. We are both from the north, and he has been president before, but I haven’t been president before, so I have told him (John Mahama) that he is my senior brother, and he should have patience for me, so I can also become president of this country.
"I will be able to be president for 8 years, and he can only be president for four years, so if the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for 8 years rather than four years," he said, as reported by myjoyonline.com.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia has yet to select his running mate for the NPP ticket in the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
