Bronx, NY -- The Hausa Community in New York crowned Alhaji Baturey Sidi Nagaya, its first chief (Sarkin Hausawa'n Ghana) during a colorful coronation ceremony in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
The guest of honour was; Sheikh Yahya Al Amin, one of the most eminent Islamic scholars in Ghana, visiting New York at the behest of Yankasa Association of New York, officiated the crowning of the new chief.
In his brief address to the audience, he advised the new chief of the enormous responsibility he faces as the protector and guide of the entire Hausa community. As a chief, he must endeavor to take on some of the attributes of almighty Allah; justice, patience and benevolence. Leading such a diverse group as Hausas requires him to be just, patient and generous.
Alhaji Mohammed Jas Ajiya was also crowned as the Chief of Staff of the new Chief or "Galadima" of the Hausa community. Alhaji Mallam Salley Mohammed, Deputy Chief Imam of Yankasa Association also added that as a chief, Alhaji Nagaya as a leader must follow the principles of Allah; love, peace, unity and respect. He was obligated to the entire community and must not be receptive to only the Hausa community but embrace all other cultures.
The new "Sarkin Hausawa'n Ghana" thanked all present at the coronation and pledged to work hard to serve not only the Hausa community but for the good of mankind. He urged all Hausas in New York to respond when called to support good causes within the community. He stated that at a later date, he will invite all Hausas in New York to a meeting to discuss some of his agenda.
In attendance were; some of the prominent Ghanaian leaders such as the former Executive Secretary General of the National Council of Ghanaian Associations; Mohammed Mardah, a nephew of the new chief, the President of Yankasa Association, Alhaji Sulley Chubi, Chief of the Yankasa Community in New Jersey, and Alhaji Adamu Talikai Braimah, former President of Yankasa Association as well as other community leaders.
A formal reception will held at a later date when the new Chief will be introduced to the Ghanaian community at large. Stay tuned ?.
