Govt to reward teachers on earth, not in heaven

Breman Asikuma, C/R, April 18, GNA- Mr Sampson Kwame Anfako, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Chief Executive, has noted that government recognised the need to reward teachers on " earth but not in heaven".

He said when teachers are rewarded in heaven they would enjoy the booty alone, but on earth the enjoyment would cover their wives, children and other relations.

In a speech read on his behalf, at the Best Teacher Award organised by the District Directorate of Education, Mr Anfako said central government and the district assemblies had realized the importance of instituting incentive packages for teachers.

Thirty three(33) teachers received refrigerators, gas cookers, bicycles, cassette tape recorders, while eight teachers serving at remote communities were also honoured.

Mr Anfako said the national educational reforms was aimed at addressing the falling standards of education, saying this could be achieved through provision of text books, teachers accommodation, capacity building and incentive packages.

Mrs Janet Lassey, District Director of Education enumerated problems facing teachers in the area as lack of accommodation facilities and transportation and appealed to the community leaders to support them to over come these obstacles. She said over 100 vacancies existed especially in the remote areas to filled by professional teachers.

Mrs Lassey said despite these challenges, teachers had the responsibility to make the Ghanaian child literate . She said the District made a forward stride in the Basic Education Certificate Examination last year, and called on the teachers and pupils to improve on the record.
