Govt absorbs part of school fees

THE Government has released ?27 billion for disbursement to all public senior secondary schools in the country to absorb part of the fees which would have been paid by parents.

The amount is a part-payment of the ?81 billion commitment government made to help parents meet the school fees increases for the current academic year.

A release issued in Accra and signed by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Education, Mr Ahmed Ayuba, said “the money which was released by the Ministry of Finance represents government’s absorption of some fees which would otherwise have been paid by parents of students in secondary schools”.

The release commended the heads of schools for managing the situation creatively while awaiting the funds.

The Minister of Education, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, said in an interview that his office is working hard to make sure that an addtional ?27 billion is released soon.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi noted that the funds are meant to settle the cost of general stationery, sports fees, building fees, cultural fees, sanitation, and textbook user fees.
