Govt Spends ?18bn On Dagbon

Accra, Oct. 10, Evening News – The government has spent more than ?18bn within the last 18months in trying to restore peace in the Dagbon Traditional Area in the Northern Region. This excludes the contributions of civil society organizations engaged in relief and peace building efforts in the conflict.

The Minister of the Interior, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, revealed this when he addressed a week-long workshop on peace building organized by CARITAS International (Ghana), a Catholic humanitarian organization, in Accra.

He said Ghana must realized that the resources spent on relief, rehabilitation and peace-keeping operations by the government and other development agencies in the sub-region represented large numbers of schools, hospitals, roads and other social and public services while loss of lives and limbs represented human capital that was so vital for the development of the country.

Owusu-Agyeman hoped that such workshops would help train the people to solve conflicts in an amicable way in order to pave the way for sustainable peace.
