Government to set up committee to oversee constitutional amendment

Mr. Dominic Azumah, Minister of State at the Presidency, on Sunday announced that government would set up a five-member committee to oversee the amendment of the 1992 constitution.

The five-member implementation committee would facilitate the process of amending the constitution in accordance with Chapter 25 of the 1992 constitution and as per the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission.

Mr. Azumah said this at a media engagement for journalists and media practitioners from the Western and Central Regions at Takoradi to sensitize them about the content of the commission’s report and the government’s white paper.

The CRC was mandated by government in 2010 to elicit the views of Ghanaians on the operation of the 1992 constitution, its strengths and weaknesses and to recommend to government for consideration.

The Minister of state said government adopted 90 per cent of the recommendations made by the CRC adding, “Where government did not accept the commission’s recommendations, the reasons for that decision were been stated”.

Mr. Azumah noted that the media engagement would enable practitioners to be better informed and subsequently use their various platforms to educate Ghanaians and also encourage a healthy discourse on the report.**
