Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has revealed that the government of Ghana is considering a safety mechanism for the protection of journalists to be executed by mid-2019.
“The protection of media practitioners is also to witness a boost with the introduction of a coordinating mechanism on the safety of journalists before July,” the minister said in a statement on Friday, 3 May 2019, to mark World Press Freedom Day.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day is on the theme: “Media for Democracy, Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”.
Mr Nkrumah further noted that the government is also in the process of implementing a Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP) to beef up the efficiency of journalists.
He said the government is committed “to supporting measures that deepen the frontiers of free expression in the advancement of our democracy”.
