The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that government plans to construct a new Accra–Kumasi motorway despite ongoing financial constraints.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Dr Ato Forson noted that the government has begun feasibility studies for a new motorway connecting Ghana's two major cities - Accra and Kumasi.

He added that the project is expected to be completed within two and a half years once plans are finalized.

"I expressed Ghana’s appreciation for BADEA’s longstanding support, particularly in the social sector, which continues to be an investment in our future. Despite the tight fiscal space, we must continue to invest in the real sector. That is why the government has begun feasibility studies for a new Accra–Kumasi motorway, to be constructed within two and a half years," he stated.

Government to channel loans into long-term economic gains - Dr Ato Forson

Dr Ato Forson further stressed that the government's future borrowing will be strictly aligned with projects that deliver long-term economic and social value.

"I emphasized that Ghana’s debt sustainability has improved significantly, and borrowing going forward will be targeted at transformative projects like these," he said.

The new Accra–Kumasi motorway project forms part of a broader strategy to channel external financing into ventures that enhance productivity, competitiveness, and investor confidence.
