Government reviews Bawku curfew

Accra, May 27, GNA - The Government on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Tuesday renewed the curfews hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its environs from 1800 hours to 0600 hours (6pm to 6am) from May 26. A statement signed by Nana Obiri Boahen, a Minister of State at the Interior Ministry said the curfew hours imposed on Pusiga had also been reviewed from 12 noon to 0600 hours to 18hours to 0600 hours (6pm to 6am).

"The ban on carrying of arms, ammunitions or any offensive weapon in the Bawku Municipality, Zabugu, Binduri, Pusiga and Zoosi townships still remains in force and any person found with any arms or ammunitions would be arrested and prosecuted," the statement said. The statement said peace in the affected areas continued to remain very fragile as tension and suspicion prevailed. The security personnel at post and the REGSEC would continue to monitor the situation closely to consolidate peace.

Government appealed to the chiefs, traditional rulers, opinion leaders and the people of the Bawku and its affected areas to continue to work towards peace and mutual trust "for where wars have thrived, no meaningful development project has taken place." The statement urged all the factions to exercise maximum restraint, eschew all bitterness and rancour and partner government to find a permanent and lasting peace to the area.
