Government renews curfew in Nkwanta amid escalating violence

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has renewed the curfew hours imposed on Nkwanta Township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

According to a press release dated September 4, 2025, the curfew will run from 6:00 pm to 5:00 am daily.

It noted that the curfew will take effect on September 4, 2025, by Executive Instrument, following advice from the Oti Regional Security Council.

The government has appealed to chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and residents of the area to remain calm and use peaceful, non-violent means to address their grievances.

“Government continues to urge chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their grievances to ensure peace in the area,” the statement said.

In addition to the curfew, a total ban has been placed on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within Nkwanta and its surrounding communities.

The Interior Ministry cautioned that anyone found in possession of such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

“Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in the Nkwanta Township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement added.
