The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has announced that the government has released $1 million to help settle part of the outstanding arrears owed to the University of Memphis in the United States.
The intervention follows mounting concerns over the possible revocation of scholarships, evictions, and deportations of Ghanaian students enrolled at the institution.
Registrar of the Scholarships Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, assured students and their families that efforts are underway to avert any adverse consequences, during a press conference held in Accra on July 30,2025.
“We are on course with the issues regarding the Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis. Ghanaian students will not be deported; I give you that assurance,” he stated.
Asafo-Agyei disclosed that the government had already paid $400,000 and was processing an additional $1 million to reduce the current debt, which stands at approximately $2.2 million.
He noted that the total amount owed is $3.6 million, but the ongoing audit has influenced the phased disbursement approach.
According to him, the allocated funds are with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and will be transferred to the Bank of Ghana before being sent to Washington for onward payment to the university.
The secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the academic progress and living conditions of Ghanaian students studying abroad, emphasising that all arrears will be addressed in due course.
