Government is committed to Rule of Law

Akyem Swedru, April 26, GNA - Mr Felix K. Owusu Adjapong, Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs on Wednesday said Government's commitment to ensure transparent, accountable and participatory democratic governance was yielding good results. He cited the commendation US President George W. Bush gave President John Agyekum Kufour during his recent visit to the US and the assistance of 500 million dollars from the Millennium Challenge Account for Ghana to assist in poverty reduction.

Mr Owusu Adjapong who is also the Member Of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Swedru was addressing the 11th Presbytery Conference of the West Akyem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Thanksgiving Service at Akyem Swedru.

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government would not indulge in excessive use of power but rather uphold righteousness, accountability and respect for human rights.

Mr Owusu Adjapong pointed out that the country's socio-economic development would depend to a large extent on the way it was governed and pledged the Government's commitment to uphold the rule of law. The Majority Leader expressed concern about moral decadence in the society especially on the use of narcotic drugs among the youth and appealed to churches to use the pulpit to address the situation. He acknowledged the tremendous role Presbyterian Church of Ghana had played in the development of education in the country. Mr Owusu Adjapong announced that Government had given approval for the construction of the Presbyterian Primary School at Akyem Swedru and about 200 million cedis had already been released to the Birim South District Assembly towards the project.

Mr Frank Kwame Busumtwi, Birim South District Chief Executive urged religious bodies to work in harmony with each other towards the spiritual and social upliftment of society.

Reverend Alice Kyei-Anti, Outgoing Chairperson of the West Akyem Presbytery thanked the Presbytery and Council members for their support, assistance and appealed to them to continue to live in unity towards the development of the church and community.

She called for closer co-operation from traditional authorities and church leaders towards the establishment of an education endowment fund to cater for needy school children.
