Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka

Following the tragic drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School in the Black Volta River, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has outlined measures his government is implementing to prevent similar incidents.

The students, all members of the school’s cadet corps, tragically drowned near Dikpe on June 14, 2025.

Addressing Parliament on July 2, 2025, Muntaka highlighted a series of coordinated interventions by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and other relevant stakeholders aimed at enhancing water safety and increasing public awareness.

“Rt. Hon. Speaker, the Regional Security Council, through coordinated efforts with all relevant agencies, has put in place the following measures: regular sensitisation of canoe owners/operators and residents along the Black Volta Basin; sensitisation of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety; provision of life jackets to canoe operators by the Ghana Maritime Authority; and regular monitoring to ensure safety standards are upheld,” he stated.

The Member of Parliament for Asawase also indicated that REGSEC will ensure all canoes are properly maintained.

He added that students of Lawra Senior High School, particularly the three survivors of the tragic incident, will be provided with psychosocial support.

Muntaka expressed hope that these measures would help prevent similar tragedies in the future, describing the deceased students as “future leaders whose lives were tragically cut short.”
