Governing Council for Community University College Inaugurated

Anaji (WR), Feb. 24, GNA - A 14-member Governing Council was on Thursday inaugurated to oversee the affairs of the Community University College (CUC), a private university in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis in the Western Region. The council chaired by Professor J. S. K. Ayim, former Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology meets the benchmark of the National Accreditation Board (NAB) before it gives final accreditation to a tertiary institution.

Justice Kofi Akrowiah, High Court Judge, Sekondi charged council members to see the oath as a biding proclamation and remain committed to duty and ensure the growth of the University college. The CUC formed part of the 93Asare Oppong School Complex" a group o= f educational facilities in the region, which was registered on February 29, 2009. Mr Ayyub Morgan, Registrar of CUC said a number of programmes have bee= n assessed by panellists from NAB, which would enable the college to run degree courses in three faculties, namely Business, Science and Nursing. I= t would also offer Diploma and certificate programmes in future. "We have already paid in full our affiliation fees to the University= of Ghana while an experienced University Professor of pedagogy has been appointed as the Principal", he added.

Mr Morgan said the university have lecture rooms, Auditorium, books an= d e-library, computer science laboratory, nurses demonstrational and skills development laboratory and Offices with internet connectivity. Ms Betty Bosomtwi-Sam, Deputy Regional Minister lauded the efforts of private stakeholders in education for their contribution towards the human resource base of the economy. She said a university in the Twin-city was long overdue and the coming into being of the CUC would help train the manpower needs of the region particularly in the oil and gas industry. "I am actually over-whelmed, to say the least, the progress the coll= ege has made so far. I wish to congratulate the founder, the governing Council and management for what have been achieved," she added. Ms Bosomtwi-Sam noted that hard work and perseverance always paid and asked the council to work hard in order to complete preparations to enable the university start its programmes in September. Mr Joseph Ben Asmah, Headmaster of Sekondi College who chaired the programme called on the university not to compromise on academic standards in the interest of profits.

"I urge you to churn out graduates who can solve the teething socio-economic issues of our time."
