Gov’t never supported us financially - Golden Rackets

Ghana’s Tennis team, the Golden Rackets', failure to qualify to the Euro-African Zone II in the Davis Cup has been attributed to the Sports Ministry’s refusal to finance this all-important competition.

The seven-day tournament in Egypt was solely supported by a few corporate entities and individuals without government’s concern.

The Golden Rackets were defeated by Algeria, Namibia and played for pride against Tunisia on Wednesday which they lost.

The team was made up of George Darko, Wisdon Na-Adjrago, Japheth Anwasiba Bagerbaseh, Pascal Ziyab Alome and Captain Joseph Acquah who have all expressed their frustrations representing Ghana at the competition.

“What we needed was motivation even the government never supported us with anything from per diem and bonuses which we don’t even know. It was just sacrificial and we wanted to do our best for the country but rather unfortunate we failed”, they told Starr Sports.

This means Ghana will still languish in Zone III for the next three years.
