Gov't Records Recovered From Market Women

Records from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department have been seized from traders who were using them to sell their wares at various markets in the Accra metropolis. The records cover the remittances for pensioners of the Accra metropolitan assembly for July this year. A young man seized the documents from the market women when he chanced upon them using the papers to wrap fish and doughnuts.

Recent reports of poor records keeping come in the heels of an earlier incident in which some market women were found using duplicate birth registration forms, as wrappers for smoked fish.

Nothing has come out yet of an investigation launched by the statistical service to find out how the birth registration documents got into the hands of the women at the Makola market. While we are yet to be told the outcome of the findings, more women have been seen using birth registration forms as wrappers for roasted plantain and groundnut in other suburbs of Accra.
