Gov’t Initiates projects to revamp Elmina and Cape Coast Castles

The Government of Ghana has initiated projects to renovate two (2) of the most sort after castles in Ghana; the Elmina and Cape Coast castles.

Speaking at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Executive Board 207th Session in Paris-France, the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who disclosed this, said “Ghana has recently initiated projects at the highest level to revamp Elmina and Cape Coast Castles towards sustainable tourism.”

According to the minister, works on these historic sites are being done with consideration to recommendations of the World Heritage Committee on these projects, and the government would take concrete steps to address the Committee’s concerns.

Elmina Castle and the Cape Coast Castle are two of about forty “slave castles”, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. The castles are now recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
