Gomoa East and West register 16,213 people

Apam (C/R), July 2 GNA - Gomoa East and West have registered 16,213 people in the just-ended voters registration exercise, as compared to 14,267 in the 2008 exercise.

Mr Stephen Bertino, Electoral Officer in charge of the two Districts, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Apam on Thursday. He said in Gomoa East 8,342 people comprising 4,144 males and 4,198 females, registered as against 7,426 in 2008, whereas 7,871 people made up of 3,875 males and 3,996 females registered in Gomoa West during this year's exercise as against 6,841 in 2008. Mr Bertino said 1,391 people applied for the replacement of their missing cards in Gomoa East, as against 1,909 in the Gomoa West in the recent exercise.

He commended the Electoral Commission for combining the voters registration with the application for the replacement of missing identity cards as it would minimise the incidence of double registration. The Electoral Officer explained that people who had their cards missing did not register again but applied for replacement. He commended the officials who conducted the exercise and the agents of the various political parties for their cooperation and for a good work done.

Mr Bertino described the exercise as very successful and added that the new register would be on exhibition from August nine to 15 this year, and urged the electorate to visit their polling stations to cross-check their names.
