Gold Coast Market- Northeast Philly's Popular African Market

Over a year ago, a Ghanaian named, Martin Karikari, OKESS aluminus, class of 88 was managing a restaurant on the busy South Street in Philadelphia. The owner of the restaurant decided to sell the restaurant to the highest bidder after the expiration of its ten year lease. Martin and his wife, Helena had always wanted to run an african market since there was none in his neighbourhood. The family lives in the North East Philly section and the streets surrounding Castor Ave, a popular street has many Africans, Caribbeans, Asians and Hispanics as inhabitants. Seeing the loss of job as a blessing in disguise, Martin started shopping for the best location to open this African Market. A shoe shop on Castor Ave at the corner of Maggee Ave closer to Martin's home was also about to close down. Martin decided to talk to the landlord about renting the space. With sacrifice and hardwork, the dream of opening an african market named; GOLD COAST MARKET has become a reality. Martin and his family invited Ghanaweb for a tour of this family owned and operated store. Gold Coast Market deserves a spotlight because it has gone from unknown to becoming a popular and busy neighbourhood convenient store which caters for the needs of many African-Americans, Caribbeans, Hispanics and Asians in North East Philadelphia.
