The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has advised Akonta Mining Company Limited to seek legal action in the courts if they believe the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources unfairly revoked their mining licence.
Sharing his views on the ongoing standoff between Akonta Mining and the minister, Kwesi Pratt Jnr stated that the issue at hand is not insurmountable.
He noted that the company has the option to challenge the legality of the minister’s revocation of their licence in court, should they believe the decision was taken unjustly.
“… I have seen Akonta Mining Company’s statement refuting the minister’s remarks and claiming their innocence. This is not a problem at all because in this country, if you feel wronged by what someone has done or said about you, you can take legal actions at the court. You have been accused to which your licence has been revoked. If you think the minister acted unlawfully, there are laid out processes to redeem yourself,” he said during a panel discussion on Peace FM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The veteran media personality also expressed optimism that now that the government — through the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah — has begun revoking mining licences, others found culpable in similar illegalities should be subjected to the same treatment.
“We are carefully observing to see if the others found culpable will also have their licences revoked. Once the minister has set it in motion, we look forward to see if others will follow suit,” he added.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr, speaking on the government’s decision to amend certain Legislative Instrument regulations on mining, urged the authorities to go beyond amendments and work towards the complete eradication of the illegal mining menace in the interest of the country’s development and well-being.
