Gnat seeks better conditions

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) regards industrial relations as a course to seek better conditions of service for its members and not a platform to stage strikes.

Mr. Joseph Ankomah, Techiman District GNAT Secretary, made the point when briefing a newly elected executive for the district's branch.

The executive will steer the affairs of the branch for two years. Mr. Ankomah urged the officers to be abreast with GNAT's constitution and conditions of service and update their knowledge in the field.

"Even though the saying that once a teacher, forever a teacher holds, there surely must be some difference between modern teachers and the Gold Coast ones," he said.

Mr. Ankomah took the executives through trade union dynamics, conditions of service in the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the work of a local secretary, chairman and treasurer.

Among those present were Madam Gladys Osei, GNAT treasurer, and Mr. James Amoo, accountant of the Fiagya Rural Bank, who briefed the members about the activities of the bank.
