Ghanaians who attain 18 years should register as voters anytime -

Ganyaglo

Ho, Aug. 13, GNA - Mr Francis Ganyaglo, Volta Regional Secretary of National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday called on Electoral Commission (EC) to institute measures that would allow Ghanaians who had attained 18 years to register as voters anytime.

He made the call at a press briefing on issues at the just-ended limited voter registration exercise in the region at Ho. Mr Ganyaglo said the shortcomings of the exercise showed lack of proper planning towards the exercise and urged the EC to ensure thorough and effective planning to safeguard the December 7 elections. He said the EC's shortcomings not-withstanding, the registration exercise in the region would have been peaceful but for alleged interference and resort to force by some Municipal and District Chief Executives and New Patriotic Party (NPP) activists both in and outside the Region to cheat.

Mr Ganyaglo mentioned in particular events at Wli-Todzi, Kadjebi, Dambai and Adidome where NPP activists allegedly resorted to intimidation against registration officials, NDC Parliamentary aspirants and some Parliamentarians.

"We are compiling reports on all those incidents for our national headquarters," he said.

Mr Ganyaglo said despite what happened, the party was "in firm control of the situation in the Region."

He said "the NDC would like to send a clear signal to its opponents especially the NPP to desist from such acts and allow people to go about their work freely."

Mr Ganyaglo called for an independent enquiry into events that took place in the Region during the exercise.
