Ghanaians perish in Nigeria plane crash

Accra, Oct. 24, GNA - A number of Ghanaians were on board the Bellview Boeing 737 aircraft that crashed in the swamps of Lagos after take off from the Murtala Mohammed Airport. Sources told GNA that staffs of a bank in Accra were on the plane that crashed on Sunday night.

Officials of the Bank said they were in the process of informing the families of the deceased before coming out with the details. Secretary and another Ghanaian, who had just been employed by ECOWAS, also perished in the disaster.

The Bellview Airlines Boeing 737 plane took off at 1850 hours last Saturday from Lagos on a scheduled flight bound for Abuja and vanished from the radar.

There were 110 passengers and a crew of six on board. The aircraft lost contact with control tower about three minutes after take-off

Bellview is a Nigerian-owned private airline operating routes within Nigeria and West Africa and from Lagos to London. Its service to Abuja is popular with diplomats and international businessmen. ECOWAS spokeswoman Adrienne Diop said some of the Community's most important officials were on board. She did not give out the full list, saying; "their names would only be released once their families had been informed".

In May 2002 an airliner plunged into a suburb of Kano, killing 115 on board and scores more on the ground.

There have been a number of recent near misses, including an incident in July in which an Air France jet arriving in the oil city of Port Harcourt from Paris hit a herd of cattle.

No one was hurt in the incident, but that plane was badly damaged.

Listed below are the victims. Numbers 3, 84, 87, 93, 96 and a member of the crew (Eshun Ernest) have Ghanaian sounding names
