Ghanaians must praise NPP over ‘US military base’ agreement - NPP communicator

As a section of Ghanaians continue to grumble over a planned setting up of a ‘US military’ base in the country and kicking against any such move, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communicator in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Yaw Opoku Mensah is calling on such persons to rather be praising the government.

“Ghanaians should praise the government for not shielding information about the agreement unlike Gitmo two”, he said.

“The previous NDC administration shielded information about the Gitmo two but this government has been bold to offer us social accountability”, the outspoken communicator disclosed on Kumasi-based Otec FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

Mr. Yaw Opoku Mensah, therefore, took a swipe at Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) accusing them of playing devil’s advocate at the expense of the larger populace.

Meanwhile, former President Jerry Rawlings who is the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked against the proposed “enhanced” military cooperation between Ghana and the USA.

According to him, “Ghanaians have had enough foreigners dominating their economic and social life” and that adding foreign troops to the “discomfort” would be a bit too much.

Cabinet has approved the agreement, which could give unrestricted access to several Ghanaian facilities and wide-range of tax exemptions to the United States Military.

The agreement, which was expected to be laid before Parliament Tuesday also states: “United States Contractors shall not be liable to pay tax or similar charge assess within Ghana in connection with this agreement”.
