Ghanaians asked to prevent aliens from registering

Kwabeng, March 12, GNA - Mr Emmanuel Boafo, East Akyem District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged Ghanaians to prevent aliens from participating in the forthcoming voter's registration exercise.

He reminded the people that they were obliged to assist the Electoral Commission to ensure the compilation of a credible voters' register and to guarantee that only eligible voters voted in the Election 2004.

Mr Boafo was speaking at a public forum jointly organised by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the NCCE at Kwabeng in the East Akyem district on Friday.

It was aimed at sensitising the people on the need to register as voters and to explain policies of the GWCL to the public.

Mr Boafo said registering as a voter to elect leaders was a civic responsibility of every citizen towards the deepening of democracy. He, therefore, appealed to all Ghanaians who are 18 years and above and with sound mind to register as voters to enable them to exercise the franchise in the forthcoming polls.

Mr Boafo reminded Ghanaians that it was an offence to keep someone's voter's Identification card after the registration exercise. The Eastern Regional Chief Manager of the GWCL, Mr Ebenezer Garbrah, called on the people to pay their water bills promptly to enable the company to operate effectively and said the layout system would soon be upgraded to boost water supply in Kwabeng.

Mr Gabrah said the company received complaints that some people were monopolising the water supply system (pipelines) in the town adding that "the pipelines are provided for the people in the town so that they could connect water to their various homes to facilitate the work of GWCL".
