Ghanaians Unanimously Reject GMO Testing!

Special Feature, by Pan-Africanist Briefs

Ghanaians have overwhelmingly rejected the very idea of GMO testing
as disingenuous, dangerous, reckless, and irresponsible!

Joy Online was recently hailed as one of the very rare media organizations
assisting in the campaign for the proliferation of GMOs in Africa, at the
recent Africa Green Revolution Forum in Arusha, Tanzania. It does not
surprise us to see them issue a highly charged propaganda statement as
"news"! Fortunately, Ghanaians are not having any of it! The AGRA, Joy
Online campaign is proving hard to sell. The NPP needs to find a way of
revising their manifesto to correct their intention to inundate our
breadbaskets with GM crops! The reason is simple. If you read the comments
section on Ghanaweb under the news story, "Ghana to begin GMO
testing", General News of Friday, 12 October 2012, Source: Joy Online, you
will find an overwhelming rejection of the whole idea of GM in agriculture.
Ghanaweb forum is a place where we rarely find this level of unanimity:

The more developed economies who started with these manipulations are now
backing out; because of ceritified unhealthy side effects on humans and
einviromental degradation. Why do we have to go into GMO? - Author: Kwasi

Comment: Re: HONESTLY, FOOLS ARE RULING US
There is need for caution as the whole idea of GMOs is still controversial.
Bt cowpea would only be resistant to pod borer, what of the thrips that are
more important especially in northern Ghana. It means farmers would still
need to spray.Pls we need serious discussion on this before plunging in to
the arena. - Author: Paul, Date: 2012-10-12 05:52:12

Comment: Re: HONESTLY, FOOLS ARE RULING US
There is nothing to discuss. You can not improve on anything that God has
created and declared whole. This is genocide and must be stopped by any
means necessary including military force because the lives of Ghanaians are
at stake. Politicians are very very wicked people. - Author: Truth be

Comment: GM Crops in Ghana
The subject of GM crops is not a tea party or a subject that a team of
scientists would want to use it for advancement in their careers. It is a
very controversial subject which needs a lot of experiments scientifically
as well as public discourse before such a move can be taken. It impinges on
the rights of local farmers to grow their own seeds. It raises ethically
issues like humans trying to play God creating and owning living matter. It
has the potential to create biological pollution and not to talk about
after effect of chemical use in growing them. As a developing country we do
not have the money and technical capabilities to with the fallout of all
these, so why do we want to this path? - Author: Atanfo, Date: 2012-10-12

Comment: Aaaba
do you know what these westerners have done The have built a seed bank in
he Arctic so that in an event of any catastrophy destroying crops can have
those seeds to plant and eat and thereby contol the world. We as Africans
are soo blessed that we have everything. Now that we are producing crops
that have no seeds what do you think will happen when the food produced no
longer givers seeds for reproduction. Are we as Africans and for that
matter Ghanaians thinking at all. Anything whether good or bad we will take
what is this? - Author: Felix, Date: 2012-10-12 06:58:58

HELP SAY NO TO MONSANTO IN GHANA!

We cannot afford to be mere spectators of our history and not participants!
This is not a struggle we have to wait for anyone to lead! We are all in
this together. The only people exempted from this are those who do not need
to eat food in order to live!

If you know you eat food, and that what you eat has an impact on your
health, you don't have to wait for a politician to tell you what to do when
you see moves to contaminate your food just for the private profit of the
share-holders of multinational corporations!

Please help us to push this debate into the main stream political currents
in the lead up to the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in
Ghana. Those seeking to sneak in this bad surprise are shunning a public
discussion.

PLEASE DO NOT LET THEM KEEP QUIET FOR LONG!
Help compel the NPP to account for their "GMO Manifesto"!

PLEASE Copy and paste the following and help spread a struggle that belongs
to all of us! This is a struggle for our national sovereignty, public
health, biodiversity, environmental sanity, economic prosperity, peace,
dignity, and social progress!
