Ghanaian women saluted for their resilience.

Accra, Mar. 8, GNA - The National Coalition on Domestic Violence Legislation in Ghana on Wednesday congratulated Ghanaian women for keeping their families intact, healthy and economically sound, in the face of difficult challenges.

"We salute you for your resilience" a statement issued to mark the International Women's Day and signed by Mr Adolf Awuku Bekoe, Coordinator for the Coalition said in spite of the invaluable role women played in national life; they were poorly represented in leadership and decision-making positions. It said violations of the rights of women and children eventually prevented them from active participation in both public and private spheres of national life, and called on government to introduce policies that increase the participation of women at all levels of decision-making.

The statement said brute force had often been used to keep women at positions determined by society, and called on those who believed in the equality of men and women to help in the fight against gender-based violence.

It urged government to pass the Domestic Violence Bill to deal with the many cases of women and child abuse as well as to create a safe environment for women in both the domestic setting and the public arena.
