Ghanaian wins UNESCO award.

Mr John Kusi-Acheampong, Secretary-General of the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO and winner of this year's UNESCO's Einstein Silver medal presented the award to President John Agyekum Kufuor at the State House in Accra.

Mr Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Minister of Education who accompanied the winner said Mr Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, presented the award to Mr Kusi-Acheampong on June 2, in recognition of his immense contribution towards national development and international co-operation.

He said having served in that capacity for 23 years, Mr Kusi-Acheampong was globally recognised as one of the living depositories of UNESCO's activities and the longest serving in that position worldwide.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi said Mr Kusi-Acheampong served on the UNESCO's 12-member Group of Experts on Financial and Administrative Matters in 1998 and 1999. The Commission also won the Most Active UNESCO National Commission in Africa Award.

President Kufuor said he felt honoured to be presented with the award and this demonstrated the talents and services rendered by Ghanaians, who keep on excelling in international circles.

Presenting the medal to Mr Kusi-Acheampong, President Kufuor said: "I am happy to give you the medal, you must treasure it and Ghana is proud of you."

Mr Kusi-Acheampong said it was a great honour to inform the government about the award since he has gone through both good and bad experiences during his tenure.

He said before he retires next year, he would write his memoirs for the country and future generations
