Ghanaian in court for huge cocaine haul

Accra, June 2, GNA - A Ghanaian and two Togolese who were arrested at Nsawam at the weekend with 399 parcels of cocaine appeared before the Greater Accra Regional Tribunal on Monday on various charges of illegal possession of drugs.

Kwame Anane, a Ghanaian driver, Eugene Kofi Amewu an unemployed Togolese and Valentine Kofi Deblui, a Togolese driver, were brought before the tribunal under heavy police guard.

The three men are being held for conspiracy, possessing narcotics drugs without authority and importation of narcotic drugs without authority. The court did not take their pleas.

They were remanded into police custody until June 19. DPS Paul Kissi Frimpong, the prosecutor, prayed for an adjournment pending further investigations.

He said between 0600 and 0700 on May 30, a team of policemen upon a tip-off mounted surveillance on a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number GT 3359 Z from Kumasi.

DSP Frimpong said the police team intercepted the vehicle at Nsawam and a search on the truck uncovered 399 parcels of substances suspected to be cocaine concealed in an artificially created compartment. The driver and the two others on board the truck were arrested. They are assisting the police in their investigations.
