"Volta Lake at lowest level ever", is the frightening banner headline of the Times. In the accompanying story, the paper reports the Minister of Mines and Energy, Mr. Fred Ohene-Kena as announcing that the present water level of the Volta Lake is 240 feet lower than the worst previous level of 248 feet.

In a related story, the Times says the government has announced a number of measures being pursued in collaboration with the district assemblies, to replace conventional energy system with solar street lighting systems.

The Times in a back page story headed: "Experts disappointed at rise in population", says contrary to the anticipated reduction in the population growth rate from 2.6 per cent to 1.7 per cent by the year 2000, the rate has rather increased from 2.6 per cent to 3 per cent.

In another back page story headlined: "Nana Yaw retains title", the Times says Ghana's WBA bantamweight champion, Nana Yaw Konadu, successfully defended his title when he knocked out Abraham Torres in the second round of their scheduled 12-round title fight in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the weekend.

The Times in a front page story headlined "K'si transport owner in assassination plot", says Nana Kwabena Poku, 58, a prominent Kumasi-based transport owner, is being interrogated by the Kumasi police over an alleged plot to assassinate Mr. Prince Ohemeng Assibey, 45, a former assembly member, in connection with a land dispute.

In an inside page story, the Times reports that the Berekum District Assembly has initiated measures to address the declining standard of education in the area.

The Times in another inside page story reports that the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has for the past two years, paid three billion cedis as pension to 2,532 pensioners in the western Region. I
