Ghana takes migrant worker exploitation concerns to UN Human Rights Council

Ghana has called on member states of the United Nations to strengthen protections for migrant workers and their families while urging an end to hostilities in conflict zones.

Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samuel Yao Kumah, made the call in a recent address during a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council.

He stressed the need for human rights to remain central to migration governance.

According to him, Ghana is pursuing bilateral labour agreements to strengthen legal safeguards for its citizens working abroad.

"Protecting migrant workers and their families is integral to this commitment. Ghana is pursuing bilateral labour agreements to strengthen legal safeguards for our workers abroad.

“These frameworks must promote fair recruitment, decent working conditions, and access to remedies while preventing exploitation,” he said.

Yao Kumah also called on member states to position human rights at the centre of migration governance.

"We urge member states to place human rights at the centre of migration governance consistent with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration," he added.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms, citing the country’s Constitution, the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
