The Ghana Climate Center of Excellence has been launched with the aim of educating the public on climate change and its impact on human lives.
The Center will serve as a platform for generating practical solutions, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and empowering communities to effectively respond to climate change. It will also promote diversity, inclusion, and emergency management in climate action.
Speaking at the launch in Accra on Friday, March 27, 2026, CEO of I-DIEM, Chauncia Willis-Johnson, stated that the initiative seeks to raise awareness among Ghanaians about the growing threat of climate change, which continues to affect livelihoods and contribute to environmental challenges such as water depletion.
She emphasized that the Center will serve as a platform to inform and empower citizens on how climate change affects daily life and what actions can be taken to reduce its impact.
Willis-Johnson further noted that the Ghana Climate Center of Excellence has collaborated with the Ministry of Climate Change and Sustainability to ensure the safety and well-being of Ghanaians.
She added that the initiative will also create opportunities for young researchers to gain knowledge and build capacity in climate-related studies.
The launch marks a significant step toward strengthening climate education and promoting sustainable development in Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Issifu Seidu, the Technical Director at the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Cedri Dzelu, emphasized the importance of the Center in addressing the country's climate challenges.
He noted that climate change is having a far-reaching impact on livelihoods, food security, and national development.
Dzelu highlighted the government's commitment to advancing climate action, including efforts to promote renewable energy, sustainable land use, and climate-smart agriculture.
He also emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing climate change, citing the need for collaboration between institutions, academia, and industry players.
The launch of the Ghana Climate Center of Excellence is seen as a significant milestone in the country's efforts to tackle climate change.
The Center is expected to play a key role in promoting climate resilience and sustainability in Ghana.
