The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed concern over the alarming rise in cases of medical negligence in the country.
Addressing the country at a media briefing on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Akandoh said the country spends an average of not less than GH¢10 million on medical negligence cases at just one medical facility.

The minister said that while these cases are costing the nation a significant amount of money, the country still lacks funds to purchase necessary equipment for health facilities.
“Medical negligence, anytime I hear that I (sic). We spend not less than, in some cases, one facility, not less than GH¢10 million on medical negligence maybe you don't know. As a country, we don't have the money to buy the equipment, but we are spending so much,” he said.
Akandoh also disclosed that about three new cases of medical negligence have come to his attention within the space of a week, which require his response.
He underscored the urgent need to eliminate such issues, describing medical negligence as a ‘monster’ that must be dealt with decisively in health facilities.
He stressed his office’s commitment to ensuring that the menace is addressed appropriately.

“As I speak to you now, the cases on my table this week on medical negligence are three that the Attorney General has written to me to provide responses for. It's a major issue that we are dealing with.
“There are things we are discussing, I cannot put everything in the public domain at moment and at appropriate time, we may address you on medical negligence. It's a monster rearing its head that we must deal with appropriately and we shall deal with that,” he said.
