Ghana's unemployment rate is 11.2% - Ministry

Statistics at the Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment have revealed that 11.2 per cent of the country’s population is unemployed.

The ages of the unemployed range from 15 and 24. Mr Joe Donkor, the Deputy Minister for the Ministry, disclosed this at the National Consultation and Launching of the Youth Employment Network in Accra. He said the figure was derived following the national registration exercise which attracted one million unemployed people. Mr Donkor revealed that 60 per cent of the unemployed who registered did not want immediate employment but wanted to be equipped with entrepreneurial skills.

To that end, he said the Ministry had instituted skills training and employment placement programmes aimed at developing and building the capacity of the people to enable them to be gainfully employed. Mr Donkor said the government had set up an Inter-Ministerial Advisory Committee to address the prevailing youth unemployment problem in the country.
