The US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has acknowledged the role of Ghana in the promotion of stability and democracy in West Africa, particularly amidst growing security concerns due to violent extremism in its sub-regions.
She said the important role of Ghana in peacekeeping and regional security cannot be downplayed, while stressing on democratic transition of power and its support to weaker neighboring countries to countering attacks from terrorists.
Speaking at the opening of the 13th African Land Forces Summit in Accra, Palmer spoke on the need to critically adapt and strengthen the armed forces to be able to confront evolving threats that undermine and destabilise countries.
She said “It is critically important that we adapt and strengthen our armed forces to confront the evolving threats that seek to undermine and destabilise our countries and regions. Ghana remains an exporter of security, and a key democratic model as violent extremism threatens this region’s stability and prosperity.
"The United States is proud to co-host the African Land Forces Summit with Ghana and of our partnerships across the African continent in support of this endeavor."
She called on the military leaders to build crisis management reforms and policies to address security issues through collaboration, connection and deliberations.
She added that the fight against threats in the security systems was not just one regional effort, but a collaboration across the world, noting that terrorists can attack any region regardless.
“The threats have no boundaries and need collaboration to address the pressing security challenges across African and beyond” she added.
Professionalism in the Ghana Army she said, builds a stronger force for the Ghanaian democracy through peace and stability.
The theme for the summit is "Optimising Land Forces for The Emerging Security Environment."
Senior land force leaders from African nations will have the opportunity to build and strengthen relationships, exchange information on current topics of mutual interest, and encourage cooperation in addressing challenges.
