Ghana has placed second in the 2014 cholera ranking in West Africa.

Ghana recorded a total of 28,944 cholera cases with 247 deaths.

The latest figures were released by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.

Ghana followed Nigeria which took the lead with 35,946 cases and 755 deaths.

Guinea Conakry was at the bottom of the ranking with two cases and no death.

Ghana’s Open Defecation rate has reduced from 22 percent in 1990 to 19 percent in 2015.

UNICEF, however, said this is worrying since the Millennium Development Goal target is 11 percent.

The Central region was ranked fifth in Open Defecation with 14.8 percent rate as against the national average of 19 percent.

The statistics were released by UNICEF and the Environmental Health Services Department of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
