Ghana not immune to terror attacks; law enforcement agencies must step up - Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said, Ghana cannot be immune to terror attacks though the country enjoys a peaceful coexistence both in religion and otherwise as compared to other African nations.

President Akufo-Addo delivered this speech at the Kofi Annan Peace and Security to mark the one year anniversary of the former UN Secretary General late Kofi Anna.

“Ghana must know she cannot be immune from terror attacks. She is determined however, to give in to religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence that exits between the majority Christian and the minority Muslim religious groupings in the country.”

In his address, to delegates and former heads of state at the forum, he noted that the porous nature of our borders calls for a comprehensive approach to curtail the growing threat of terrorists and extremist activities in nations.

“The porous nature of our borders call for visual and continental approaches to contain the growing threat of terrorist and extremist activities. Despite a play as a beackon of peace, stability and democracy in a region that is played by their activities of terrorist and extremist groups.”

Speaking on the theme, “Peace Operations in the Context of Violent Extremism in Africa”, President Nana Addo indicated that it is necessary for a country to have strong institutions with adequate responsibilities and loyalty to its citizens.

“Such a system requires a strong institution of state such as well-resourced parliamentary and judiciary, efficient law enforcement agencies and effective security enforcers with several responsibilities and allegiance to the wider public interest not just to the conveniences of the government of the day.”



The Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum was organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) Ghana in collaboration with the Federal Republic of Germany and Governments of Norway. To bring together political leaders, diplomats and experts to dialogue on the most critical evolving peace and security trends on the Africa continent.

The forum which took place Wednesday, September 4, 2019 was followed by a sod cutting ceremony for the construction a 20 foot monument spearheaded by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and wife of the late Kofi Annan, Nane Maria Annan at the Kofi Annan Training Centre in Accra.

The 20 foot Kofi Annan memorial statue is being constructed by the Stone Depot Limited and it is said to be completed in six months.

The statue will measure 18 foot with a pedestal of 2 foot totaling 20 foot tall. It has a width of 6 foot, a thickening of 5 foot and weighs 21 tons.
