The Director of Climate Change and Ozone at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Felix Addo-Okyireh, has revealed that Ghana recently sold the largest Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome (ITMO) in Africa to Switzerland, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global carbon market.

According to him, the deal represents a significant step toward protecting both the environment and the economy.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, Addo-Okyireh stated that Ghana is investing heavily in carbon market initiatives as part of its broader climate strategy.

He added that the country is actively generating and selling carbon credits, helping to reduce global emissions while supporting national development.

“This is evidence of the significant work Ghana is doing in the climate space. We are making meaningful contributions on multiple fronts,” he noted.

The deal was executed under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which allows countries to trade emission reductions to meet climate goals.

Ghana’s achievement positions it as a pioneer on the continent and sets a benchmark for future international carbon transactions.
