Ghana has dropped six places in the latest 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 61st globally, a stark decline from its 2024 position of 55th.

In the Sub-Saharan region, Ghana has dropped out of the top five most peaceful African countries in the latest ranking, falling seven places below nations such as Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Madagascar, all of which rank higher globally than Ghana.

According to the GPI, Ghana’s ranking indicates a decline in peacefulness; however, it still remains a country with a high level of peace.

The report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), said; “The 2025 GPI finds that global peacefulness continues to decline and that many of the leading factors that precede major conflicts are higher than they have been since the end of WWII.

“More countries are increasing their levels of militarisation against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, increasing conflict, the breakup of traditional alliances and rising economic uncertainty.”

On the global front, Iceland remains the most peaceful country, followed by Ireland, New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland as the top five.

At the other end of the spectrum, the least peaceful countries include North Korea (ranked 149th globally), followed by the Central African Republic (150th), Somalia (151st), Burkina Faso (152nd), Myanmar (153rd), Mali (154th), Israel (155th), South Sudan (156th), Syria (157th), Afghanistan (158th), Yemen (159th), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (160th), Sudan (161st), Ukraine (162nd), and Russia (163rd).

The Global Peace Index, an annual report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 countries, representing 99.7 per cent of the world’s population.

The index measures peacefulness across three core domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.

These factors are analysed through 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators.
