Ghana beef up security at US installations in Accra

Security at United States installations in Accra were on Tuesday beefed up by the Police following the terrorist attacks in the major US cities of Washington and New York.

A visit to the installations in the capital indicated that all staff had left the building with the exception of security personnel on guard duty. One security man said "they say America is under attack so they have all gone home."

America has been thrown into a state of shock and mourning when three hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in a well co-ordinated attack.

Ghana Airways, KLM and Swiss Air have cancelled their flights to the US. President George W. Bush has promised the America people that the perpetrators would be sought and appropriate response carried out.

The Ghana Government was not forthcoming on the question of whether the incident would affect President Kufuor's intended visit to Britain and the US later this week.
