Ghana asks for the extradition of an American in cocaine case

Accra, Oct. 23, GNA- The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has requested the United States (US) authorities to extradite to Ghana an American national alleged drug dealer who escaped from lawful custody in April last year.

The suspect Ms Warren Carmella Toni, was from the US en-route to Amsterdam and was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport in March last year, with some whitish powder substance suspected to be cocaine.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Frank Kwofie told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra that the police were yet to receive a response from the authorities in the US where the suspect has been arrested.

Mr Kwofie who is also the Deputy Commander of INTERPOL Accra, said the suspect a citizen of Detroit, was arrested and found the substance concealed in her brassieres and wigs.

Mr Kwofie said the suspect was detained at the Osu Police Station but she allegedly jumped bail the following month after being remanded into Police custody pending prosecution.

He said INTERPOL, Accra, mounted a search for her until July, this year, when the US Embassy in Accra informed INTERPOL that the suspect has resurfaced in the US and enquired whether she was still wanted in Ghana.

The Embassy, he said, requested for a confirmation and INTERPOL, Accra, sent to INTERPOL Washington, photographs of the suspect and copies of the arrest warrant for her extradition to Ghana. Mr Kwofie said the suspect faces another charge of escaping from lawful custody.
