Ghana Water Corporation To Be Privatised

The Minister for Works and Housing, Mr.. I.K. Adjei-Mensah, says the Government has decided to pursue Private Sector Participation in Urban Water Supply in order to accelerate the pace of water delivery. He was speaking at the opening of a one-day seminar for workers of Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation in Accra on Monday 27 October. The seminar, which was under the theme: "Increased Private Sector Participation in the Water Sector: Addressing the needs of the GWSC Workers:, was attended by more than 100 workers of the corporation from all over the country. Mr.. Adjei-Mensah said the seminar has been organised not only to inform the workers of Government's policy to allow private participation in the water sector, but also to provide a forum for the workers to bring out their concerns and proposals for a smooth transition to private sector participation. Mr.. Adjei-Mensah said the move by Government to involve private participation does not mean that GWSC is to privatised but that the government will only be leasing self-contained urban water systems to private operators, who will be expected to bring in capital to meet the running and maintenance cost. He explained that the measure has become necessary because the traditional sources of financing the water sector are no longer feasible hence the need to include other non-traditional sources to complement government's effort.
