Ghana Reinsurance Company Donates To University of Ghana

Accra, Oct 11, GNA - Ghana Reinsurance Company on Wednesday presented 50 million cedis cheque to the Students Financial Aid Office established by the University of Ghana, Legon to support the needy and bright students of the University.

Mrs Christina Dowuona-Hammond, Board Chairman of the Company, said Ghana Reinsurance Company was the first to respond to the call. Since 1998, Ghana Reinsurance Company has consistently made annual donations towards the postgraduate programme of the University. Mrs Dowuona-Hammond said the Board and Management of Ghana Reinsurance Company strongly supported the University's initiative in setting up the Students Financial Aid Office purposely to assist the needy and bright students to gain access to tertiary education and especially to aid the College of Health Science Post-Graduate Programme. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe said some of the students could not adequately afford their fees so they went outside the country to work to mobilize some foreign money to pay their fees.

He also said the ultimate aim of the scheme was to relieve students of that financial problem. Mrs Kokoi Adu, Head of the Fund, said about 500 students had benefited from the scheme and about 160 students were also going to be given the opportunity.
