Ghana Mission launches ?10 save a life appeal

Almost all members of the ?5-No-Balance Police Appeal Fund Committee constituted last year by the Mission to mobilise funds from the Ghanaian community in the UK in support of the Ghana Police Appeal Fund have been reappointed to spearhead the activities of another committee.

The committee dubbed: ?The ?10-To-Save-A-Life? Appeal Fund Committee would, among other things, spearhead the drive to enlist contributions from Ghanaians in the UK to support the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The new committee, however, has Dr. Emmanuel Akuffo, a Consultant Psychiatric and a Clinical Director of North East London Mental Health Authority and Senior lecturer of Barts & London School of Medicine & Dentistry, as Chairman.

Other members of the Committee are Mr. Peter Wiredu, Counsellor (Passport & Immigration) Ghana High Commission and former Chairperson of the ?5-No-Balance Police Appeal Fund ? Vice Chairman; Mr. Charles Wereko, Counsellor (Information) Ghana High Commission ? Secretary; Ms. Martha Peprah-Fredua, a retired nurse ? Assistant Secretary; Mr. Noble Adjei Boakye, Financial and IT Consultant ? Public Relations Officer; Mr. Fritz Andoh, MC(Information) of the Ghana High Commission, Liaison officer between the Mission and the Committee and Mr. Mark Entsie, First Secretary (Welfare & Consular)also of the Ghana High Commission, - Financial Secretary.

Others are Nana Ampem Darko Larbi I, Chief Executive, Starline International Ltd. and Dompiahene of Adukrom, Dr. Lawrence Akwetey, Director of Seagull Procurement, Trade and Development Consultancy, London; Mrs. Cecilia Akuffo-Director, Residential Home for Learning Disabilities, Croydon, Surrey; Mr. Imma Plahar ? President, Ghana Union, London, Mr. Abeka Gogo ? Chairman of Ga Dangme Foundation UK; Mr. Kobby Mensah-Kuma, an Architect; Mr. Kojo Binfoh, a Financial Consultant, Bishop Prince Hampell of Liberty Revival Fellowship, Mr. Dennis Tawiah, an events and management consultant; Mr. Kwame Adu ? Secretary of Ghana Union, Mr. Bill Ayivor, President of NOVIHA (UK & Ireland), Nana Kwesi Adarkwa II, Abesimhene of New Juaben, Koforidua, Ms. Susan Akomeah, a Garment Technologist; Mr. Joe Boadu Ayeboafo of the Ghana High Commission; Mr. Kwame Twum Barima, President of Ghana Secondary Old Students Association, UK and Ms Abena Agyeman, a social worker.

Inaugurating the Committee at which the Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Mr. Kwabena Baah-Duodu was present, H.E. Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana?s envoy to the UK congratulated the members of the old Committee for their magnificent job which resulted in the realisation of ?27,710.10 (twenty-seven thousand, seven hundred and ten pounds, ten pence) for the Police Appeal Fund.

He thanked the Ghanaian community for responding positively to the Police Appeal Fund and urged them to endeavour to achieve another feat by donating handsomely towards the Korle Bu Appeal Fund.

He announced that the ?27,710.10 realised had been used to procure 1,000 raincoats, 1,000 whistles,1,000 handcuffs, 1,000 torch lights and 1,000 batons and a number of computers for the Ghana Police.

He appealed to the members to endeavour to hit this year?s target of ?50,000.00 part of which would be used to procure basic essentials for the Children?s block of the Hospital.

Responding, Dr. Akuffo, who is also a product of the Ghana Medical School, thanked the High Commissioner for the confidence reposed in the members of the Committee and described the new charitable project as a noble and important cause to which all patriotic Ghanaians should support.

After the inauguration of the Committee, the members at its first meeting endorsed two planned activities to raise funds for the Fund, namely, the Korle-Bu Save-A-Life Fundraising event scheduled to take place at the Mission?s premises at 104 Highgate Hill on Monday August 30th, 2004.

The second major event which would be attended by Dr. Frimpong Boateng, Chief Executive of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is a fundraising dinner dance at The Decorium on Saturday November 13th, 2004.
