Ghana Mission clocks parking fines

The Ghana High Commission in London was listed among a group of foreign diplomatic missions in the capital which have clocked up a huge increase in unpaid parking fines.

According to junior Foreign Office minister Tony Baldry, the staff of foreign embassies failed to pay 3,613 such penalties last year, almost double the 1993 figure of 1,941.

The list, which was topped by Diplomatic staff from five Arab and African countries included: United Arab Emirates - 470 Qatar - 353 Saudi Arabia - 125. India - 79 Ghana - 76

The US, which has one of the largest embassy staff in Britain, had 22 unpaid parking fines last year, up from only three the year before. The Government later disclosed it was aware of 25 alleged "serious offences" by people entitled to diplomatic immunity. The majority involved drink-driving or shoplifting, Foreign Office Minister of State Baroness Chalker said in a Lords written reply. Six diplomats or members of their families were withdrawn from Britain as a result of these offences, compared with only one in 1993. Serious offences are defined as those carrying a maximum penalty of at least six months' jail.
