The Ghana Institute of Surveyors (GHIS) as part of its social corporate responsibility has presented a library to the Anloga Atiehipe Municipal Assembly Basic School in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region.

The library project was provided to contribute inculcate good reading habits into the pupils and as well sharpen their knowledge of the English language.

This was deemed right because the school was identified to have majority of its pupils being unable to read and speak the English language fluently, which affected their output at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The Library which costed the GHIS about GhC 25,000 is furnished with academic and story books which cuts across all levels of basic education.

The said amount was used to complete the structure which was previously at the lentil level, furnish the library with chairs and tables, fans, a marker board and the books.

The President of the GHIS, Surveyor Edwin Addo-Tawiah, noted that the library was provided based on request by the school’s authority and was optimistic performance of students at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations would improve if the library is put to good use.

He, however, announced a special package for pupils who would score between aggregate 6 and 12 to serve a stimulant for the final year students who would be sitting for the BECE in 2018.

“We just learnt that for the past years, the best aggregate the school had was 22, just to make sure that we see the impact of furnishing them with textbooks, which the government cannot provide...we want to see if they are actually using it well, so we set up a challenge that if any pupil is able to get 6-12 (aggregate) we will present an award to that individual”, he explained.

The Headmistress for Anloga Atiehipe MA Basic School, Fidelia Ackumey, appreciated the initiative adding the library would significantly contribute improve on the reading habits of pupils and consequently have a positive impact on the results at the BECE.

She, however, uttered that the school is still imbedded in numerous challenges which deters the school from fully achieving its academic objectives.

She outlined that “the school doesn’t have a well-designed and up to standard classroom for the early development department, we don’t have an ICT laboratory nor a computer for ICT tutorials.”

“We are therefore pleading with all and sundry to help provide the school with this requisite educational needs”, she pleaded.
