Ghana Highways To Commercialise Roads

The Ghana Highway Authority will soon start charging tolls on all major roads and highways in the country as part of a cost recovery programme for its operations.

The acting Chief Executive of the Authority, Mr. A. K. Hammond told JOY FM that the toll collection would begin with roads that are rehabilitated by the Authority.

The Ghana Highway Authority has come under criticism for encouraging the use of unapproved routes to the Tema Motorway by charging tolls on such routes.

Reacting to the criticisms, Mr. Hammond said the Authority would not sacrifice public safety for commercial expediency. He said as a pre-cautionary measure, a special unit has been established to evaluate safety precautions as well as the feasibility of commercializing roads.
